Paula Radcliffe has defended her title at the New York City Marathon to become the second woman to win the race three times.
A very good point. And less than two hundred years ago people were used as slaves, less than human, in this country. And one hundred years ago white women couldn't vote. And fifty years ago blacks couldn't vote in the southern U.S., and what consenting adults did in the privacy of the bedroom might be considered a crime against the state. And still we execute people (hoping it will deter other murderers, but it doesn't) while espousing nonviolence.
The point is, cultures and religions can evolve into more civilized ones. You don't segregate or force people into civilization, you educate them. It doesn't happen in ten years, or fifty, it requires patience and tenacity, and respect for how those traditions of prejudice came to be.
When people have full stomachs and are open to others' ideas, we aren't so combative. We think about how to make things better, we're concerned about the family next door.
